    Anti-Vibration System
STIHL has developed a system for minimizing the vibration levels of handheld outdoor power equipment. The STIHL anti-vibration system helps reduce operator fatigue and provides a more comfortable working experience.
  • Zoom
    Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

    Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Zoom
    Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.

Important Information
WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chainsaws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus (Q) additional chain braking feature, STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chainsaws.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Saw I recently traded my MS 391 in and got the MS 261 CM. The 391 was a great saw but heavy for the type of cutting I have been doing. The 261 has plenty of power to push the 20 inch bar all day without issues. The saw starts easy, runs all day and cleans up fast and lightweight. Couldn't be happier with the purchase. Thanks

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Glad I went to the pro saw I have owned the farm/ranch series saws previously and was pleased with them. This time I sprung for the pro series and am really happy with the decision. The small increase in power and the reduction in weight make the saw more versatile than a homeowner or farm/ranch saw in the same size.In addition, the Mtronic ignition and decompression valve makes starting the saw effortless whether the saw is hot or cold.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cheap shroud The shroud on the saw is so cheap that the handle slipped off my hand when starting and went through the side of the shroud. to make matters worst it was stuck in a branch on the tree and when I went to move the branch to get the saw out it fell 6 feet and broke the shroud all to pieces. What a piece of Junk.Though it was the same as the 260 saw , but I was sure wrong.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight, versatile & powerful saw. I purchased this saw as an "in-between" saw from an MS 180 C-BE & an MS 461. I converted the bar to a "E-Light", 20" with 3/8" pitch & .050 gauge with a full chisel chain. Its as light as the 180 (also with an "e-Light" bar) & cuts like the 461. I live & use the saw around a 7,000 foot elevation +; it starts easily & runs reliability every time, without fail. I like this saw (as well as the others); typical Stihl reliability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing piece of equipment After purchasing a home last summer with a wood stove I found myself using an ancient MS230 hand me down saw to cut firewood this winter. Needless to say that saw had seen better days and was a bit overworked on the white oak, cherry and maple that I was cutting from both my property and a friend's farm. I started doing exhaustive research and had almost settled on a Farm Boss. I kept reading reviews about the MS261 and by chance, ran into the owner of a local tree removal company so I asked him for thoughts and a recommendation. He told me this was the only saw he would spend his money on and that it would likely last me a lifetime which would not be the case with the Farm Boss. One thing led to another and I decided to pick one up with an 18" bar from a local dealer I literally couldn't be happier with it. This saw always started within three pulls and has what feels like limitless power and torque compared to what I'm used to. In the past month since I bought it Ive cut roughly four cords of hardwood with it during which time Ive experienced zero problems. I picked up one of the all in one sharpeners for the .325 chain which also worked for the upgraded bar on my old 230 and cut wood in my spare time on average two days per week in my free time. This saw is a joy to work with and was worth every single penny. If you're in the market for a high quality saw I cant recommend this one enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product is light weight and easy to use. Bought this saw as a back up for my MS 361. Changed the bar to a 20" along with the drive sprocket so that I can use a 3/8" chain, the same as my 361. I have seen no problems and with the lighter weight the 261 may become my #1 saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nothing runs like a Stihl! Been a Stihl fan for years, own multiple items, the 261 is proving to be a great saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Third Stihl - should have gone Professional sooner Power to weight is great. Contrary to popular logic, the shorter the bar the more power and less weight. With the 16" bar it is easier and safer to handle. It keeps it out of dirt and away from toes. My other two saws were not professional model and should have been. Live on a ranch at 9500' and heat with wood. Bottom line: Takes half the time to cut wood.
